What does warp mean?
Every fabric consists of interlaced threads. Warp is the lengthwise thread in a roll and weft is the transverse thread. The photo below shows the rainbow warp and the black weft interlaced into the warp.
The next step is warping the threads on the multithread beam called the warp beam.
The warp beam is placed on the weaver’s beam (dimension is from 12 to 20cm) which has a metal beam heads on both ends protecting the threads from sliding. The distance between the team heads depends on the warp width.
Warp parameters:
Warp lenght - depends on the yarn thickness and capacity of the warp beam. Usually it is about 700-1000m.
Warp width - is a few centimeters wider then the fabric
Warp density - indicates the number of warp yarn in cm2, depends on the weave.
Threads number - depends on fabric type.
Warp take-up - warp threads bind around weft threads. Warp threads in the fabric curve. It causes the shorting of the fabric lenght in the comparision to warp lenght.
All the warp parameters are accepted on the design stage.
The most popular warp colours are black, white and navy blue. The color change of warp is made manually by tying over 5300 strands of thread one by one!
Not only the warp color but also material can be changed. Usually we use cotton, wool, bamboo viscose and linen.
